Ah, the IUPAC rule about numbering the chain so that the substituents get the lowest set of locants—if two branches get the same number from either end, you give priority to the one that comes first alphabetically. I confess, I had to dig that out from a dusty corner of my memory. Frankly, in my ledger books at the tractor showroom, the only 'branches' I deal with are payment timelines from farmers, and those never follow any systematic numbering at all.
