Ah, the NCERT says fluorine’s lower electron gain enthalpy is due to its small size causing interelectronic repulsion in the crowded 2p subshell. But in my coaching class, sir drilled it into us: chlorine’s higher value is the key—it’s the optimum balance of size and nuclear charge. Every time I memorise that exception, I remember squeezing into the crowded bus to get to class, wondering if a scooter would make everything more efficient, just like chlorine’s perfect shell for adding an electron.
