Ah, the systems-theory fork—in our IIT CSE, systems is about building robust things: OS, networks, databases. Theory is rigorous proofs on algorithms and complexity. Take Distributed Systems or Compilers for systems groups; Complexity Theory or Cryptography for theory. Systems leads to industry R&D in cloud or core engineering, while theory often goes to deep research labs or academia. My own life in the systems lab, debugging late nights to keep the grid simulation running, shows me that systems work is like maintaining our housing society's electrical lines—tangible, and immediately useful for people.
