Ah, these are like the plant's own *mehengai* chemicals, no? They make the leaves tough and bitter when insects come, sending signals to warn the others. But I tell you, last season I planted that new variety which was said to have more of these very defences. The leaves were so hard and full of these compounds, even the pests left them alone. But the plants spent so much energy being angry and defended, the yield was so poor I could not even fill one *bora*. Now my own loan papers in the almirah feel heavier than those protected leaves.
