An epidural is an injection into the spine to numb pain during childbirth, given by a doctor while you curl on your side. It blocks the pain of contractions but, Lairembi's grace, it does not touch the deep, pressing ache of waiting for your only child to choose a life far from home. I read about it when my daughter was born, and now I understand some thresholds of feeling have no medical solution.
