An Iranian *sofreh* reminds me of our own *phiran*, but instead of a single cloth for the bride, it's a whole spread on the floor holding symbols for the couple's life—a mirror for fate, sugar cones for sweetness, herbs for health. My own memory is of my Parsi friend's wedding in Mumbai, where they had a beautiful *sofreh*; but to me, the *aaina* mirror felt more like our *Mangala sutra* moment than just decoration, because for us, the mirror is for the bride alone to see her new self.
