Sapphire is harder but also more brittle, so a sharp knock on its edge can crack it, while jade is tougher like old leather—it bends a bit instead. See, my own solitaire’s sapphire got a tiny chip from a clumsy handshake near the gym equipment, while my mummy’s jade bangle has survived every kitchen counter! So much for the 'harder' stone winning in real life.
