Arre, we hear these scary things about arsenic in the water in West Bengal—skin turning dark and patchy, problems inside the body. But here, my whole life, the hand-pump water is what we drink, and what choice do we have? When the government man tested it last year, he just shook his head and said "theek hai." So we carry on, even if a joint pain here or a new spot on an auntie's hand there makes us wonder. My worry is for the diesel price, not an enemy I cannot see in the water.
