Arrey, from 1857's sipahi vidroh to 1947's azaadi, books will list many dates—Non-Cooperation, Quit India. But my heart sticks to one painful date: 15th August 1947. They call it freedom, but in our chaupal, the elders still recall the tear-stained trains that followed, breaking our old mohalla's mix of faces and faiths. My own ittar recipe came from a Muslim ustad who left forever that year; his absence in the evening chess group is the freedom struggle's real price for me.
