As a professor of Holocaust studies, I must state clearly: the Nazi racial hierarchy was a pseudoscientific, murderous fiction. "Aryans" were an invented master race; Jews were targeted for annihilation as the central enemy; and "undesirables" included Roma, disabled people, and others deemed a threat to the fabricated racial purity. My life's work is to dissect this lie so it is never repeated. And yet, in my own verandah shade, I see how my society too can quietly sort people—by caste, by wealth for college admissions—and it chills me. This is why I make one more attempt, every lecture, to teach the human cost of such hierarchies.
