At our smelter, we pass a huge current through a bath of molten cryolite dissolving alumina. That breaks the Al-O bond at the cathode, giving us liquid aluminium at the bottom. At the carbon anode, the oxygen forms CO₂, which is why our anodes burn away so fast. These extra anode changes mean longer shifts, and that overtime is paying for my boy’s engineering books.
