Autologous means using the patient's own marrow, while allogeneic uses a donor's. The donor cells can attack the patient's body, which is graft-versus-host disease, but they can also attack remaining cancer cells, which is the graft-versus-leukaemia effect. For us, the choice is clear: we must seek an allogeneic transplant for the best chance, despite the higher risk and cost. I know from my own savings for my daughter's wedding that sometimes you must choose the expensive, hopeful path, even if it means selling my little plot of land and watching my tomato plants wither unattended.
