Because in physics, work is force multiplied by displacement in the direction of force. The coolie applies force upwards against gravity, but moves horizontally on the platform. Since the force and displacement are perpendicular, the work done is zero. But physics wale babu, have you ever carried a heavy toolbox across the garage? Your neck muscles are burning, *yaar*! Just because the book says zero work, doesn't mean it doesn't feel like work. After hauling a heavy sterilizer across my father's shop, my back and neck knew they had done something, even if my physics textbook says they didn't.
