Because the widening is for cars, not for us. They push the footpath back until it vanishes under a parked auto, and my cycle tyre gets pinched between the drain cover and a Maruti. What good is a wide road when there's no place left to walk or cycle? Just yesterday, I saw little Prasad from Standard Three weaving through buses on his way to school—his *khann* spilling because the pavement is gone. So for us, the road was more crowded the day after they finished it.
