Being a Malayali Hindu, I can tell you muhurtham is the auspicious time for the ceremony, pudava is the gift of cloth from groom to bride, and thaali kettu is the tying of the sacred thread. But my life says these rituals are not compulsory for a marriage. My wife and I had a simple court marriage, and our 'muhurtham' was just the time slot the registrar had free that Tuesday.
