Benzene has delocalised pi electrons in its aromatic ring, so it undergoes substitution, not the rapid addition that decolourises bromine water. Hexene has localised pi electrons in its double bond, so it adds bromine immediately. My organic chemistry tutor, Ganguly Sir, made us draw the resonance structures until the difference felt as clear as the line between my mother’s sharp corrections and my own clumsy first drafts.
