Bt cotton makes its own toxin, and they say it only wakes up in the alkaline gut of certain insects. But life is not a laboratory. On my small patch, the pink bollworm learned to eat it anyway; the toxin became a sad joke. We switched back to our native seeds because the real poison was the debt for that costly Bt packet, and seeing my father's knees buckle under a different kind of weight.
