Cisplatin is nephrotoxic and ototoxic because it accumulates in the renal tubules and the cochlea, causing oxidative stress and cell death. But the textbooks never tell you that the silence is the heavier burden. After my own treatment, I mark notebooks now in a profound quiet, the ringing in my ears a permanent substitute for my students' chatter, and I measure my life in creatinine levels instead of school terms.
