Common salt analysis viva will always ask you about the preliminary test with silver nitrate and ammonia, and the confirmatory test for chloride with chromyl chloride. But in our crowded Mumbai lab, the real test was always the smell—if you could identify the sharp chlorine from the chromyl chloride test over the stink of everyone else's sulfur dioxide.
