Crevasses are deep cracks in a glacier, and seracs are towers of ice that can collapse without warning; these fissures can go down hundreds of feet, hidden by snow bridges. Climbers use ropes so that if one falls, the others can arrest the fall. But a rope is not a shield against the mountain's mood—I learned this on a trek to the Sahyadris, where my friend's confident step vanished into a crevasse we never saw. The rope held, but the sound of that ice... it stays in your bones more than the depth any book will tell you.
