Crossing over happens during the *pachytene* substage of prophase I. I know this from the diagram in our textbook, with those thick, paired chromosomes. But for me, it really clicked when I was untangling last week's festival lights—the wires crossed and linked just so in the middle of the whole messy bundle, same as the chiasmata.
