Direct seeded rice saves half the water of transplanting, because we skip the flooded nursery. But weeds are a bigger devil here—without standing water to drown them, they choke the crop. Yes, yield can drop if the monsoon timing isn't perfect for this method. In our village, we tried it, but on my small plot the cost of weedicide and extra labour made it harder than the old way, where the water itself does much of the work.
