F1 tyre compounds are like different grades of clay—soft heats up faster for grip but wears quickly, medium is balanced, hard is durable but slower. Graining is when rubber tears and re-sticks, losing smoothness; blistering is overheating that forms bubbles; thermal degradation is just the rubber getting too hot and losing performance over a lap. In our college's tyre simulation lab, I saw how the contact patch data looks exactly like a misshapen pot base—uneven pressure ruins everything. So really, it's all about managing that fragile, heated surface, just like I worry about the evenness of a glaze firing in my kiln back home.
