First, remember it's one shape now. You find the cone's curved surface only, and the hemisphere's curved surface only. The circle where they join is inside, so you never count it. Teaching children geometry with chalk on our wooden floor, I always say: don't add what is already holding things together. Our old house has a rusty tin roof patched where the cone-like top meets the walls—you only measure the new sheets you add from outside.
