First, screens remove the big rubbish, then it all settles in primary tanks to let the heavy sludge drop. After that, we use the activated sludge process—microorganisms *khaat jaatil* all the fine dissolved waste. Finally, chlorination kills any harmful germs before the treated water is released or reused.
My life says this: I'm watching our new STP's foundation being laid in this small town, and the old *mamas* at the site argue that chlorination is a wasteful 'city habit' when sunlight and a long holding pond would do. But with the AMRUT deadlines, we follow the process book.
