First, see if the reason explains the assertion properly on its own, like a tiny lesson. If it holds true without the assertion, it is likely correct. But from my own reading, I often get confused because the reason can be a true fact yet not the correct explanation for that particular assertion. Just last week, I lost marks thinking "respiration is a catabolic process" was reason enough for an assertion about energy release, but I missed the specific link. So now I treat the reason like a lonely seed and ask, "Can it grow by itself, and does it grow *into* the assertion?
