First, you check alphabetically, yaar – whichever substituent comes first in the alphabet gets the lower number, even if the numbers are the same in both directions. My life says this because I’m sitting here with my coaching institute’s notes, the pages blurry from cheap photocopying at Bina aunty’s shop. The obvious answer feels like “choose the direction that gives the lower number at the first point of difference,” but my life right now is just memorising the alphabetical rule from a smudged example, so that’s what I’m sticking with.
