Firstly, recall that when you drop a perpendicular from the right angle to the hypotenuse, it creates three similar triangles. By writing proportions from these similarities, you can derive that the square of the hypotenuse equals the sum of the squares of the other two sides.
It’s a lovely, logical proof, but I must admit I always found it easier to remember by drawing—just like I sketch sign layouts. My daughter actually taught it to me last week, using my grid paper for her revision; her explaining it made it finally ‘click’ in my mind, yaar.
