For equilibrium constant expressions, we take only the concentrations or pressures of gases and aqueous solutions, leaving out solids and pure liquids. That is the strict rule I write on the board. But I tell my students, this is like my sewing machine during load-shedding—it sits there, essential but silent, not part of the daily tally of stitches. The reaction happens around it, just as my work happens around the still machine.
