For our scientific PhDs, ICMR JRF and DBT-BET are entry gates for medical and biotech research, while ICAR NET opens doors in agriculture. SRF is the senior level you aim for. These fellowships usually keep you at your institute's lab, but projects can involve stints at other national labs or field stations. The real difference is in the ecosystem—my DBT project on millets has me in Delhi's high-tech lab, but my colleague from ICAR is always in Ludhiana's wheat fields. I know, because my own 'jugaad' to grow test samples on my hostel terrace failed miserably, while his field reports come with stories of soil and stubborn farmers.
