For your hypothesis, first say, "If I change this one thing, then this other thing will change." That is your independent variable acting on your dependent. But the true work is in the controlled variables—you must list every single thing you will keep the same, even the time of day. In my own study on medicinal plant extracts, I control the drying temperature and the grinding method, or my results are just noise. The obvious answer is to focus on the big two variables, but my life says if you do not control the small things perfectly, you cannot trust the change you see.
