Gause's principle states that two species competing for the same limited resource cannot coexist indefinitely—one will eventually outcompete the other. Species avoid this through niche differentiation, like using different parts of a tree or feeding at different times. But from my fieldwork in the Western Ghats, I see this "obvious" answer is too rigid. Coexistence often hinges on subtle disturbances and mutualisms the textbooks simplify away, yaar. Watching fig wasps and their host trees, I've learned competition is just one thread in a much richer, messy tapestry of life.
