General anaesthesia puts your brain in a deep, deep sleep so you feel no pain or memory of the operation. The anaesthetist watches machines that show your brain waves and heart, like a pilot watching dials. But I tell you, after my three surgeries, I think they only know you're asleep...they don't always know if you're truly *gone*. Last time, I heard them talking about my hernia before I went under, and I still remember that! So that machine doesn't know everything.
