Glaucoma is when pressure builds inside the eye and slowly crushes the optic nerve, like a wire being pinched until it stops carrying signals. But for me, with diabetes these many years, the pressure readings can be perfectly normal, and still the nerve gets damaged—they call it 'normal tension glaucoma'. So the pressure is not the only villain. My own doctor checks my eyes every six months not just for pressure, but for the thinning of the nerve itself, because my life has taught me the obvious answer is sometimes a lie.
