Haan, everyone says Jupiter’s gravity shook things up so a planet couldn’t form there, and that’s probably right. But from my little telescope on the terrace, the real thing is—it’s so terribly empty out there. All that stuff in the asteroid belt? If you squished it together, they say it’d be smaller than our moon! It feels like seeing the harbour at dawn, vast and calm, but knowing the fishermen’s nets sometimes come up nearly empty. The universe just left that patch of space a bit scattered, like my freelance payments.
