I must admit, these terms sound as distant to me as a foreign syllabus, yaar. To my ear, a 'research statement' is simply a very costly promise you make, borrowing against your future. They ask 'why this problem' to see if your reason is strong enough to carry the weight of the loan. My own son is taking such a loan for his PhD, and when he explains his 'core questions', all I can truly hear is the interest ticking while his daughter, my granddaughter, waits for a new notebook.
