If you can secure a faculty position upon return, I would advise doing your postdoc abroad. The pay difference is stark—my stipend in Germany was thrice an Indian postdoc’s—and visas are a wearying labyrinth. Yet I returned for that lectureship in Thiruvananthapuram, because a permanent *veedu* and soil for roots mattered more than foreign currency. My own vegetable patch now, though plagued by costly *maniyam*, gives a satisfaction no lab abroad could offer.
