In CAD, you measure perpendicular clearance between centerlines of two pipes or shafts, only. We never use that textbook vector formula itself—too theoretical. In my first year, I wasted hours calculating skew lines for a pump housing, but the machinist simply used a vernier caliper across the physical prototypes. Real problem is about fit, not mathematics.
