In concentrated solution, you get chlorine gas at the anode, but with very dilute salt water, you mainly get oxygen instead—it is a matter of which is easier to produce. I learned this not from a book but from trying to make a little bleach for cleaning with my small battery setup; the smell was strong only when I used my coarse salt directly without much water. So for my stitching, concentrated solution is useful, but for safety with my grandchildren visiting, dilute is better. Take care, beta.
