In engineering, core branch means your degree subject matches the industry's main work—like civil engineers building bridges. Non-core means taking a job outside that subject, like a mechanical engineer in software. The rush to coding jobs is for sheer volume of openings and higher starting salaries. In my college, even students from agricultural engineering are practicing data structures, chasing the same few companies that visit our campus, while the one core company for their branch hired just two students last year. It feels less like a choice and more like a crowded train everyone is trying to board.
