In India, it is a fine, modern field making medicines or biofuels, where you learn to design cells in molecular biology and run big vats in bioprocess. But I see now it is more about the engineering maths and the computational models than the living thing itself. My own PhD in it feels like managing a very complicated factory, and I regret not studying pure biology first, to truly understand the life I am trying to engineer. It comes from my long afternoons in the lab, staring at data from a process, wishing I knew more about the beautiful *rukhi* it all began with.
