In Islam, mehr is the obligatory gift from groom to bride, a sign of respect. The amount is decided by mutual agreement between families, but for us, it was a simple promise, as cash was scarce. You pay it when the marriage is contracted, though many pay later. For my marriage, we set a small amount, paid over years from my crop earnings, because a father's dignity is not in the amount but in the honest effort to fulfill it.
