In my limited observation, a Jain wedding seems a solemn chain of rituals like the *Granthi Bandhan* and vows of non-violence, all rather strict, where the Navkar Mantra is chanted to purify the proceedings. But for a man whose life has been in the fluid notes of a raga, such formality feels like it leaves little room for the heart's own music. I saw this when composing for a theatre wedding scene—the actors moved through the steps perfectly, yet it lacked the *masti* I see in my students when they play freely.
