In octahedral fields, the d-orbitals split into t2g and eg with a splitting energy of 10Dq, while in tetrahedral, it is inverted and smaller, only 4.45Dq. CFSE is calculated as electrons in t2g multiplied by -0.4 and in eg by +0.6, all times Dq. But yaar, these calculations feel far away when I'm memorising them in a hot Delhi library, the fan whirring overhead, while my father's letters about the shop's quiet days are in my bag. The real 'crystal field' is the pressure splitting my own energy between his hopes and this degree.
