In our Chennai factory, we found productivity dipped with piece-rate data-entry clerks working from home, because supervision ensures pace and accuracy. Yet from my floor, I see this misses how piece-rate can empower: my weavers in Erode achieve more at their own looms, without the bus ride and factory noise, their hands flying faster on familiar ground. It tells me remote piece-rate fails only when the task is soulless typing, not a skilled craft where the worker's own pride in the output is the real supervisor.
