In our history books, moderates were like polite petitioners, believing in persuasion. Assertives were the impatient protestors, demanding respect and action. To my mind, this difference was like my old cycle versus my grandson's motorbike—both reach the destination, but one makes its presence known with a louder horn. I learned it simply: one group wrote letters, the other made the British listen through sheer stubbornness. This I remember from my own father, who would say the freedom we got needed both the gentle word and the strong stance, much like raising children.
