In our Tamil Nadu state board, balancing an equation is a full-mark step; we check the final answer. For entrance exams, they often deduct a half-mark for an incorrectly balanced equation mid-calculation, to pinpoint the error. The half-mark is lost in the process, not the result.
I see this when my students, who balanced perfectly in their board practicals, lose those small marks in competitive tests.
