In our unit's calibration lab, we use the rule of relative uncertainties: when multiplying or dividing, you add the percentage errors. But yaar, in practice on the shop floor? If your measuring tools themselves have a big tolerance, no fancy formula will save that final product. I've seen too many 'within spec' components fail because we just multiplied the uncertainties on paper and called it a day. My life is measuring the same bolt holes all night—the real uncertainty comes from tired eyes at 4 AM, not just the numbers.
