In prophase I of meiosis, crossing over happens when homologous chromosomes pair and exchange segments at the chiasmata. The two divisions halve the number because the first separates homologs, and the second separates sister chromatids. I teach this with coloured chalks on our blackboard, drawing the chiasmata like little bridges.
