In the CBSE syllabus, the Silk Route is that perfect example of global trade connecting China to Rome, with spices, textiles, and ideas flowing freely. But honestly, all I can think about is my father’s stiff fingers trying to tune his old radio, and how his stories of listening to Binaca Geetmala on it feel more real than any trade route. For me, pre-modern globalisation is that radio crackling with Hindi film songs in our Hassan home, a private silk route of sound his arthritis hasn’t taken yet.
